Hoodie GSM Guide: 180 vs 240 vs 320 — What to Pick for Your Clothing Brand (2026)

A founder messaged us last month: "I want my hoodies to feel really premium. What's the highest GSM you can make?"

We quoted 380 GSM brushed fleece. Beautiful fabric, almost coat-like, ₹820 per piece at 50-MOQ. He placed the order, paid the advance, got the samples — and immediately asked us to switch to 240 GSM for the production run.

"They're too heavy. Nobody in Mumbai will buy these in March."

He was right. And he just lost ₹2,500 on the sample fee learning a lesson that costs nothing if you read this post first.

Hoodie GSM is the most-misunderstood spec in clothing manufacturing. Most founders assume "heavier = more premium," then realize after the first batch that heavier also means hotter, more expensive, and harder to sell in a country that's above 25°C for 8 months of the year.

Here's how to actually pick the right GSM for your brand, with real numbers and zero hedging.

What GSM Actually Means

GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter — the weight of one square meter of the fabric used to make your garment. It's the global standard for fabric weight, used by every manufacturer worldwide.

A 240 GSM fabric means one square meter of that fabric weighs 240 grams. A 320 GSM fabric weighs 320 grams per square meter. Higher number = heavier, denser fabric.

For hoodies specifically, three GSM ranges dominate the market:

  • 180 GSM — lightweight (summer hoodies, layering pieces)
  • 240 GSM — mid-weight (the default for most D2C brands)
  • 320 GSM — heavyweight (premium streetwear, winter pieces)

There are weights above and below these (140, 200, 280, 400+) but those three are the volume buckets where almost all manufacturing happens. We'll get to the weird middle weights at the end.

For 80% of D2C clothing brands launching their first hoodie, 240 GSM is the right answer. The rest of this post is for the 20% with specific reasons to go heavier or lighter.

180 GSM Hoodies — The Lightweight Pick

Fabric type: Usually single jersey or lightweight French terry.
Feel: Thin, drapey, almost like a heavyweight t-shirt with a hood attached.
Drape: Falls flat against the body. Less "hoodie silhouette" presence.
Use case: Summer wear, indoor wear, layering pieces, women's-cut hoodies.

When 180 GSM wins

  • Your customer base is in hot climates (Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore). A 320 GSM hoodie genuinely doesn't sell for 7 months of the year there.
  • You're building a layering piece that sits under a jacket. Bulky hoodies don't layer well.
  • You're doing women's-cut fitted hoodies, where lightweight fabric drapes better.
  • You're an athleisure brand where breathability and movement matter more than warmth.

Pricing reality (50-piece MOQ, basic construction)

  • Per-piece cost: ₹250–₹350
  • Suggested retail: ₹699–₹999
  • Margin at retail: roughly 2.5–3.5× markup

Where to manufacture

The 180 GSM trap

Founders sometimes pick 180 GSM to save money, then position the hoodie at ₹1499 retail and wonder why returns spike. Customers expect at ₹1499 the hoodie to feel like ₹1499. A thin lightweight hoodie at a mid-premium price feels like a downgrade — they return it. Match your GSM to your price point.

240 GSM Hoodies — The Default

Fabric type: French terry (loopback) or brushed fleece.
Feel: Substantial but not heavy. The classic hoodie feel everyone recognizes.
Drape: Structured silhouette. Holds shape well. Looks like a "real" hoodie.
Use case: Year-round wear, casual everyday, the safe default for 80% of D2C brands.

When 240 GSM wins

  • You're launching your first hoodie and don't have customer data to know what your buyer wants.
  • You're targeting the mass-premium price point (₹999–₹1499 retail) — the biggest segment in Indian D2C clothing.
  • You want a hoodie that works in 9 months of the year across most Indian cities.
  • You want a safe pick that won't surprise anyone — neither too thin nor too hot.

Pricing reality (50-piece MOQ, basic construction)

  • Per-piece cost: ₹400–₹550
  • Suggested retail: ₹999–₹1499
  • Margin at retail: roughly 2.5–3× markup

Where to manufacture

Either Tirupur (cotton-dominant French terry) or Ludhiana (brushed fleece, blends). Both clusters handle 240 GSM well. Tirupur if you want pure cotton and competitive pricing; Ludhiana if you want a brushed back or cotton-polyester blend.

Construction matters as much as GSM

Two 240 GSM hoodies can feel completely different depending on construction:

  • French terry / loopback — visible loops on the inside, lighter feel, more breathable, faster drying
  • Brushed fleece — fluffy soft inside (the loops are brushed to create that pile), warmer, less breathable
  • Loopback heavyweight — same as French terry but tighter weave, more structured

If you're going 240 GSM, decide on French terry or brushed fleece before you place the order. The price difference is small (₹15–30 per piece) but the customer experience is wildly different. French terry feels like a sporty hoodie; brushed fleece feels like a cozy weekend hoodie.

320 GSM Hoodies — The Heavyweight Statement

Fabric type: Heavyweight brushed fleece or loopback.
Feel: Heavy, premium, almost coat-like in winter weight. Substantial weight in your hand.
Drape: Oversized silhouettes hold shape beautifully. Drops cleanly from shoulders.
Use case: Winter wear, premium streetwear positioning, "investment piece" framing.

When 320 GSM wins

  • You're positioning at premium streetwear price points (₹1799+ retail). Customers at this tier expect heft.
  • Your brand is winter-focused or North India focused — Delhi, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Jaipur where December–February buyers actually need warmth.
  • You're doing a limited-edition drop where each piece is an "investment" and feeling premium is the whole positioning.
  • Your brand identity is oversized streetwear where the drape and weight ARE the look.

Pricing reality (50-piece MOQ, basic construction)

  • Per-piece cost: ₹600–₹900
  • Suggested retail: ₹1799–₹2999
  • Margin at retail: roughly 2.5–3.5× markup

Where to manufacture

Ludhiana. This is exactly what Ludhiana's heavyweight fleece infrastructure was built for. Tirupur will take the order but often subcontracts to Ludhiana and charges you a coordination markup.

The 320 GSM tradeoffs nobody tells you about

  • Hot weather sales tank. From April to September, your 320 GSM stock will sit. Plan inventory accordingly — don't over-order before summer.
  • Shipping costs more. A 320 GSM hoodie weighs ~600–700g vs ~350g for a 240 GSM. Across 500 orders, that's ₹15–25K extra in courier costs per year.
  • Dry time is long. Heavyweight fleece takes 8+ hours to air-dry. Customers who hand-wash will notice.
  • Sample iteration takes longer. Heavyweight fabrics need more careful pattern grading. Expect 2-3 sample rounds, not 1.

If you're going 320 GSM, build a winter-focused calendar (launch September, peak December, soft-sell March-onwards) and lean into the "premium investment piece" framing in your marketing.

The "Weird Middle" GSMs — 200 and 280

Should you pick 200 or 280 GSM? Almost always no, unless you have a specific reason.

200 GSM is the awkward middle child between 180 and 240. Almost identical drape to 180 GSM, but ₹30-50 per piece more expensive. Customers can't tell the difference visually. Skip unless you specifically want a slight upgrade over 180 without going to full 240.

280 GSM is a defensible "premium mid-weight" — heavier than 240 but not as heavy/hot as 320. Some D2C brands use 280 to position above mass-market (₹999) but below premium streetwear (₹1799). If you're targeting the ₹1499–₹1799 retail range, 280 GSM is a legitimate pick.

400+ GSM exists (think sherpa-lined hoodies, heavy winter pieces) but is a niche category. Only relevant if you're explicitly building winter outerwear.

How GSM Affects Your Numbers

Quick math at different price points to show how GSM cascades through your unit economics:

The 320 GSM hoodie has the best margin per unit, but you'll sell fewer of them and only in specific months. The 240 GSM has the most consistent sell-through across the year, which usually wins on revenue terms over a full 12-month cycle.

The 3 GSM Mistakes Founders Make

Mistake 1: Picking GSM by what feels premium in your hand instead of what matches your customer's climate.

A 320 GSM hoodie feels amazing when you hold it. It feels suffocating when you wear it in Mumbai in October. Your customer's weather, not your enthusiasm, decides the GSM.

Mistake 2: Believing "heavier = more durable."

Construction quality matters far more than GSM for durability. A well-stitched 240 GSM hoodie with double-needle seams and reinforced shoulder taping outlasts a poorly-constructed 320 GSM hoodie every time. Spend your premium budget on construction, not weight.

Mistake 3: Not asking the manufacturer to define what "240 GSM" actually means.

There's a meaningful difference between:
- 240 GSM single jersey (lightweight, drapes flat)
- 240 GSM French terry (mid-weight, classic hoodie)
- 240 GSM brushed fleece (mid-weight, fluffy inside)

When you place an order, specify GSM + fabric construction + composition (e.g., "240 GSM French terry, 100% cotton, pre-shrunk"). "240 GSM hoodie" alone is too vague — you'll get whatever the factory has in stock.
